How to Return a Product Online and Actually Get Your Refund
Read return policies before buying, record deliveries, track pickups and refunds, and escalate step by step, up to 1915 and e-Daakhil if you need to.

Most online returns go smoothly. You tap a button, someone collects the parcel, and the money comes back. The trouble starts with the other kind: the pickup that keeps getting rescheduled, the "quality check failed" message, the refund that says "initiated" for weeks.
You can prevent most of these problems before you buy, and fix most of the rest with a clear paper trail and the right escalation steps. Here's the whole process, from reading the policy to filing a consumer complaint.
Before you buy: read the policy on the listing
Return terms vary by product, category and seller, even on the same platform. The general help page isn't enough. Check the product page for:
- Return, replacement or neither. Many electronics are replacement-only, so a faulty unit gets swapped, not refunded. Innerwear, some beauty products and personalised items are often non-returnable.
- The window. How many days, and from when, usually delivery.
- Conditions. Tags attached, original packaging, all accessories and freebies, unused.
- Accepted reasons. Some products take returns for any reason; others only if defective, damaged or wrong.
If the policy is unclear, or you need the freedom to change your mind, that's a good reason to pick a different listing. Our list of things to check before buying online covers the rest.
On delivery: build your evidence
The unboxing video habit
For anything expensive or fragile, record one continuous video from the moment you start opening the parcel:
- Show the sealed package and the shipping label with the order details.
- Open it without cutting away from the camera.
- Show the product, its serial number or IMEI if it has one, and every accessory.
- Switch it on, if it's electronic.
One unedited clip is far more convincing than photos taken later. It's your best answer to "the product was fine when it left us".
Open-box delivery
Some platforms offer open-box delivery on certain items: the agent opens the parcel in front of you and you check it before accepting. Use it whenever it's offered.
Keep everything
Hold on to the box, packaging, tags and invoice until the return window closes. A return can be refused simply because the original box went out with the rubbish.
Raising the return
- Act quickly, well inside the window. Don't leave it to the last day.
- Pick the accurate reason. It decides which rules apply, so choose "damaged" or "not as described" only if it's true.
- Attach photos or your video straight away if the form allows.
- Note the return ID and screenshot the confirmation.
The pickup
- Pack the product with every accessory, tag and freebie, in the original box if possible.
- Be available in the pickup window, and check the app updates to "picked up". Ask the agent for a pickup receipt if one is offered.
- Some pickups include a doorstep check. If the agent refuses the pickup, ask for the reason, note it, and raise it with customer care the same day.
- If pickups are missed or cancelled repeatedly, write to customer care with dates. A record of failed pickups protects you if the window runs out.
Refund timelines
Once the return is received and checked, the refund is processed. How long it takes to reach you depends on how you paid.
- UPI, cards and net banking: the refund goes back to the original payment method, usually within a few working days of being initiated. Card refunds can take longer.
- Cash on delivery: you'll usually be offered a bank transfer or platform wallet credit.
- Wallet credit: fast, but spendable only on that platform. Choose the original payment method if you're given the option and don't plan to shop there again soon.
If a card refund is late, ask the platform for the ARN (Acquirer Reference Number) or refund reference. Your bank can trace the money with it.
When it goes wrong: escalate step by step
Escalate in order, and keep everything in writing.
- Customer care. Use chat or email so there's a record. Give the order ID, return ID, dates and what you want: refund, replacement or pickup.
- The seller, if it's a marketplace order and the platform keeps passing the blame.
- The grievance officer. Under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, platforms must display a grievance officer's contact details, acknowledge complaints within 48 hours and resolve them within one month.
- Your bank. If you paid by card and haven't been refunded for an item you returned or never received, ask your bank about a chargeback. Banks set their own time limits, so don't wait months.
- National Consumer Helpline. Call 1915 or register a complaint on the helpline's website. It passes your complaint to the company and tracks it, at no cost to you.
- e-Daakhil. If nothing works, file a consumer complaint online through the e-Daakhil portal. Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, you can file where you live or work, not only where the company is based.
If you think you've been defrauded rather than just badly served, report it on the cyber crime helpline, 1930, or at cybercrime.gov.in.
Make returns rarer in the first place
Every return costs you time, and occasionally money you never see again. Buying the right thing first is the best returns policy there is. That's the thinking behind Nudge: answer a few questions and you get three picks ranked on how well they fit you, each with a reason. For the wider picture, read the hidden cost of returns.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an online refund take in India?
It depends on the platform and payment method. Once initiated, UPI and net banking refunds usually arrive within a few working days; card refunds can take longer.
What can I do if a seller refuses my return?
Escalate in writing to customer care, then the platform's grievance officer. If that fails, call the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or file a complaint on e-Daakhil.
Should I record an unboxing video?
For expensive or fragile items, yes. One continuous video from the sealed parcel to the working product is the strongest evidence if something is wrong.
Can I get a chargeback on an online order?
If you paid by card and didn't receive the product or the refund, your bank can raise a chargeback dispute. Contact the bank quickly, as time limits apply.
