How to Spot Fake Reviews When Shopping Online
Fake reviews are everywhere. Learn 9 warning signs, a 3-minute check you can run on any product, and what India's rules say about paid reviews.

Reviews are the closest thing online shopping has to asking a friend. That's exactly why some sellers fake them. A few hundred glowing reviews can turn an average product into a bestseller overnight.
The good news: fake reviews leave patterns. Here's how to spot fake reviews when shopping online, using nine warning signs and a three-minute check.
9 warning signs of fake reviews
1. A burst of reviews in a short window
Genuine reviews trickle in over weeks and months. Sort by most recent and look at the dates. Dozens of reviews posted within a few days, especially right after a product launches, is one of the clearest red flags.
2. Praise with no specifics
"Nice product. Value for money. Must buy." Real buyers usually mention something concrete: how it fits, how long the battery lasts, what they use it for. Short, generic praise in bulk suggests reviews written to a quota.
3. Repeated or near-identical wording
If several reviews use the same unusual phrase, the same sentence structure, or the same spelling mistake, they probably came from the same source.
4. Reviews that sound like an ad
Real people rarely type the full product name with every feature listed. Watch for reviews that read like product copy: "This premium ultra-fast 65W charger with advanced safety technology..."
5. Reviews about a different product
Sometimes a listing carries over reviews from an older or unrelated product. If reviews mention a different colour, size, or even a different item entirely, the rating doesn't describe what you're buying.
6. Suspicious reviewer profiles
Tap on a few reviewer names where the platform allows it. Warning signs include profiles that only ever give 5 stars, post many reviews on the same day, or review wildly unrelated products in quick succession.
7. All extremes, no middle
Genuine products collect a spread of opinions. A rating breakdown that's almost entirely 5-star, with a cluster of 1-star complaints and very little in between, can mean the positives were manufactured and the negatives are real buyers. Our guide to product reviews vs ratings explains how to read the breakdown.
8. Photos that don't look real
Customer photos should look like customer photos: normal lighting, real rooms, slightly messy. Polished studio shots or images identical to the listing are a sign the review wasn't written by a typical buyer.
9. Reviews that mention a reward
Watch for reviews that mention free products, cashback or a card in the box offering a reward for a 5-star review. Those reviews may be honest, but they're not neutral. And if you receive a product with such an offer, that tells you something about how its rating was built.
A 3-minute fake review check
Run this on any product before you buy:
- Sort by most recent. Scan the dates for bursts.
- Read three 2-star and 3-star reviews. These are rarely faked and usually the most honest.
- Check two or three 5-star reviewer profiles. Look for the profile patterns above.
- Search the reviews for one specific feature you care about. Fake reviews rarely go deep on specifics.
- Look outside the platform. A long-term video review or a forum thread from real owners is hard to fake at scale.
If two or more checks raise flags, treat the rating as unreliable and judge the product on specs, warranty and seller instead.
What India's rules say about fake reviews
In November 2022, the Bureau of Indian Standards published IS 19000:2022, a standard for how online platforms collect, moderate and publish consumer reviews. Among its key points:
- Reviews that were paid for, or written by people employed for that purpose, should not be published.
- Incentivised reviews should be clearly disclosed.
- Platforms should verify reviewers, for example through email, phone or captcha checks.
- Reviews should show their publishing date and star rating.
The standard is voluntary, though the government said it could become mandatory if fake reviews continue. Separately, the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 already covers unfair trade practices, and consumer affairs officials have described purchased reviews as fraudulent.
What to do if you spot fake reviews
- Use the report option on the review or listing. Most platforms let you flag suspicious reviews.
- Write an honest review if you've bought the product. Specific, balanced reviews are the best counterweight.
- Complain if you were misled. If fake reviews pushed you into a purchase that didn't match what was promised, you can register a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
Don't over-correct
Not every glowing review is fake. Good products get enthusiastic buyers. The aim isn't to distrust every review; it's to notice when the pattern looks manufactured. One great review means little. A consistent picture across recent, specific, mixed reviews means a lot.
How Nudge helps
Nudge doesn't pick products by popularity or review count. Your three picks are matched to what you told us you need, with a Match Score showing why each one fits. That means a product with a pumped-up rating doesn't automatically get in front of you. Frequently asked questions
How can you tell if an online review is fake?
Look for bursts of reviews in a short time, generic praise without specifics, repeated wording, ad-like language, reviews about a different product, reviewer profiles that only post 5-star reviews, and photos that look staged.
Are reviews on Indian shopping sites reliable?
Most are written by real buyers, but fake and incentivised reviews exist on every major platform. Use recent, specific and mid-range (2 to 4 star) reviews as your main guide.
Is posting fake reviews illegal in India?
India's IS 19000:2022 standard on online reviews is voluntary, but fake reviews can fall under unfair trade practices covered by the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
What should I do if I bought something because of fake reviews?
Use the platform's return or complaint process first. If that fails, register a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
